Every so often, a new bottle hits the shelves and takes the whole whiskey community by storm. It seems like every whiskey fan you know has tried it, and then the FOMO starts to set in. You are left wondering how everyone else is getting the chance to snag this awesome new bottle, when you can't find it anywhere. That's exactly what happened with my wife and me and the Old Fitzgerald: Bottled-In-Bond 7 Year. We were hunting for this bottle for months. We finally got our hands on one of our own, though, so let's see if it is worth the hype!

What Does Bottled-In-Bond Even Mean?

Bottled-In-Bond means that the distiller went through certain hoops to get that saying put on the label. At the end of the day, it's not a predictor of quality in any substantial way; however, it does provide some standardization, and I personally think people just getting into whiskey could really benefit from focusing on Bottled-In-Bond bottles to help narrow down what they like.

To earn this label, distillers have to produce a whiskey that meets the following requirements:

1. The whiskey must be distilled in a single distilling season
2. The whiskey must be made by a single distiller
3. The whiskey must be aged for at least 4 years
4. The whiskey must be exactly 100 proof
5. The whiskey must be aged in a government-bonded warehouse, with government supervision
6. The whiskey can contain no additives such as food coloring or spirits from other distillers
7. If the whiskey was distilled by one distiller but bottled by another, the label must clearly indicate this

Initial Thoughts

• Color: Slightly darker than average caramel
• Nose: A sweet woody note comes through very heavily, and it's followed up by caramel, brown sugar, and vanilla
• Palate: Liquorish, brown sugar, oak, and caramel
• Finish: Strong notes of oak and tobacco
• Overall Rating: 3.5/5

In-Depth Review

Overall, this is a solid bottle. While the taste profile doesn't align with my personal preferences, it offers sufficient complexity and uniqueness, and I know many people who would love this bottle. I did have very high expectations for this bottle, so that may be weighing into my opinion here. I'd be interested in doing a blind taste test with this bottle, to see where it stacks up when the branding is out of the way.

Again, many people are really enjoying this bottle; the bottle currently has an average rating of 4/5 on the NEAT: Whiskey Finder App, with numerous individuals giving it a perfect or near-perfect score. The flavor notes just don't hit my personal preferences, but to many, they would!

What could be better?

While this is an above-average offering from Old Fitzgerald, it falls short in some areas, particularly in terms of the proof level and the age statement. So what would I improve?

• Nose: The nose is really my favorite part of this bottle; there's not much room for improvement here. It's nice and complex, and is very inviting. It draws you in with its sweet notes and complexity.
• Taste: The initial taste I get from this bottle is spectacular. The sweet caramel flavor is balanced with great notes of oak. I just wish there were another note in there to round it out in a nice way.
• Finish: This is really what keeps me from rating this bottle a 4/5. The finish is very overpowering with Tobacco. I wish some of those sweeter notes I got initially had carried over to the finish.

So is this a buy or a bye?

For many, this is a buy at MSRP of $65. It provides a lot of complexity, and the nose on this bottle is great. I do not think I would personally "hunt" for this bottle again, but I do believe if it were readily available on the shelves, I would come back to it every so often. This is not going to be the best bourbon you have ever had; it's not supposed to be. This is supposed to be an entry point to the Old Fitzgerald lineup; it was not designed to be a bottle that is hunted for, and I think as this bottle works its way into the market, it will find its place as an above-average bottle in the $50-$70 range.

When it comes to whiskey, there are few things I love more than a good value. Now, don't get me wrong... I love hunting rare bottles, and the excitement of finally getting to try a unicorn; however, I find it equally exciting to find a hidden gem that is readily available on the shelves at a great price. So when I saw the release of the new Kirkland - Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Bottled-In-Bond, I knew I had to try it.

Bottle Background

Kirkland is obviously not distilling their own whiskey, so who is making it? The Kirkland - Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Bottled-In-Bond is made by Barton 1792... Yes, that 1792. Which, in my opinion, solidifies the value in this bottle. I paid 25.99 for a 1L bottle. If this had a 1792 label on it, it would be at least double, maybe triple that price. If this bottle were always available at Costco, it would be a staple in the collection; however, this sadly seems to be a yearly release.

Initial Thoughts

• Color: Lighter than I would have expected given the age statement. Not necessarily a bad thing, but just something I found interesting
• Nose: Caramel, Dried Fruit, Honey, Sweet, Vanilla
• Palate: Caramel, Citrus, Vanilla
• Finish: Pecan
• Overall Rating: 4/5 when factoring in price

In-Depth Review

If you are a fan of 1792, you need to grab this bottle. Kirkland has done a great job of mimicking their whole lineup, giving you more Juice in the bottle and selling it at half the price. This is not a bottle that will blow you away or be the best glass of whiskey you'll ever have, but it is a great value.

I have tried every offering from the Kirkland lineup, and I can confidently say this is my favorite. The nose is more interesting, the taste more complex, and it really seems like a bottle that is hitting above its weight class in terms of price. If this Juice were in a standard 750ml bottle, I would still consider it reasonably priced at $30-$40. In the Neat: Whiskey Finder app, this bottle currently has an average rating of 3.5/5 stars.

What could be better?

Let me preface this by saying that, for the price, this bottle is already a steal; however, when taking the cost out of the equation, it falls short of perfection. So what would I improve?

• Color: I wish this bottle had a darker color; if it were a slightly darker caramel color, it would really feel like a premium offering at a budget price.
• Nose: The nose is quite lovely on this bottle. It's approachable, yet complex, and doesn't leave much to be desired.  
• Taste: This is where I wish it were a little more complex. The notes are there, but none really stand out, and I find myself really digging to pinpoint them. A slightly longer age statement on this bottle would have done wonders, allowing it to compete with many bottles in the $50-$60 category.

Is This a Buy or Bye?

The Kirkland - Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Bottled-In-Bond is the definition of a buy. At the price point, it's hard to beat. I would actually love to put this up against the other "heavy hitters" in the budget category, because I would not be surprised if it blew them away from a taste perspective. If you are a fan of 1792, this is something you need to seek out. If not, I still recommend it for those who, like me, love the feeling of finding a good deal.

Perkins, however, just used this to fuel his fire and wanted to reignite the passion Utah once had for whiskey.  "The combination of personal passion, scientific curiosity, and a desire to bring back a lost piece of the American West is what set us on our journey", said the High West team. Perkins fearlessly set out on this journey and helped pave the way for many other craft distilleries in Utah. Today, High West is highly sought after, with some enthusiasts actively seeking rare offerings, such as A Midwinter Night's Dream.

The distillation process is a very expensive one, so High West had a lot riding on those first few batches. They planned for a very long time to ensure that they hit the mark early on in their distillation journey. "After months of planning, learning, and hard work, there was a tremendous sense of accomplishment just to see the clear spirit flow". However, like all creative endeavors, High West's process needed refinement on its first attempt. They remember that first taste as "humbling and exhilarating", and when asked to summarize those first few drops, they said, "It wasn't perfect, but it was full of promise". From that point forward, Perkins drew on his scientific background. He tested, improved, and refined High West's distillation process until they achieved a whiskey they knew was "truly exceptional." They look back on those first few drops as the start of an ongoing adventure, "That moment was the beginning of an ongoing adventure—one that continues to inspire us every day."

Many of you know my stance on allocated bottles at this point. They are a ton of fun to hunt, but sometimes, the juice isn't worth the squeeze. However, one of the bottles I always want to have in my collection is Eagle Rare 10 Year (Sometimes I've even paid over MSRP for it...shhhh 😯), and looking at the data in NEAT, it seems the community seems to agree!

So I am personally very excited to hear that they are adding a new offering with an additional 2 years of aging to it.

This project is part of a massive investment Buffalo Trace has been making ($1.2B) to build onto their facility to accommodate new offerings like this one here, and honestly, I am all for it. An additional hope of mine is that they can increase the supply of their existing portfolio to make good whiskey more accessible to the masses!

So What Do We Know About It?

• Will this be a permanent offering? Yes, according to the distillery, this is here to stay and will be a permanent offering in the Eagle Rare lineup.
• What is the MSRP? I was shocked to see the MSRP being $49.99. At that price, I think it will be hard to debate the value here.
• When can I get it? It is scheduled to be released in June 2025 to select vendors within the U.S. and will be available internationally in Fall 2025.
• What's the proof? According to the distillery, it will be bottled at 95 proof, hitting a great sweet spot for a large portion of the community.
• What's it going to taste like? According to the distillery, the nose notes will be sweet oaky aromas, and the tasting notes will consist of almond or nutty notes
• Will it be similar to the 10-year offering? Yes, they are using the same mashbill (Mashbill #1), so you can expect a similar experience, but with more complexity and depth due to the aging statement.

Final Thoughts

Like I previously mentioned, I'm very excited to get my hands on this offering. I think doing a blind tasting of these two flagship offerings will be a great way to compare age statements, because as we know, longer is not always better.
